Wooden furniture is undoubtedly built to last which is a wonderful thing for the environment. Avoiding throw away, cheaply made items will ensure that a piece of furniture stays in your home rather than making its way into landfill.
At Cutting Edge Creations we go a little further when it comes to the sustainability of our products.
Our business came to be when the love of woodwork and the waste of wood collided. We often witnessed trees being felled for construction or due to being a nuisance and simply being chipped or burned. Neither of which seemed quite right to us. The waste of material was one thing, but the loss of something beautiful was another.
While our favourite tree is one which is allowed to grow strong and tall, we simply could not bear all of this waste, especially with so much large-scale construction happening all around us. So, we got together with some awesome sawmills and saved these unwanted trees from their fate. Instead, they were delivered to the sawmills, cut, dried, and given a new chance to shine.
Looking back, we should have started to count how many trees were rescued from the fiery end, but we weren’t in this for a pat on the back. We just wanted better for the wood and for the environment!
We are so proud that the majority of the wood used to make our products is essentially waste wood. Why are we proud of that? Well, quite simply because it is beautiful wood! Any tree which is allowed to grow and thrive in a natural environment has an uncontrolled wildness to it, and we think that quality makes for amazing furniture.
But we didn’t stop there. We had offcuts from the furniture we made and we couldn’t bear to waste that either. Sure, we didn’t know exactly what we were going to do with it at first, but then it came to us...chopping boards! So now we take our amazing chopping boards to fairs and shows and sell them at an incredible price. Why sell them so reasonably? Because we would rather it was in someone’s house being loved and used than being burned as waste.
Our goal, in short, is to ensure that no tree is ever cut down for us and that we use every inch of the wood we rescue. Are we perfect? Not quite yet, but we are working on it. We use recyclable packaging where possible and are always looking for new ways to reuse any leftover wood we create.
